The Outdoor Council of Australia (OCA) is proud to support the Sun Safe Outdoors Photo Competition led by Cancer Council NSW - celebrating great outdoor experiences that also demonstrate best‑practice sun protection.
Australians love the outdoors, and our industry plays a vital role in getting people active, connected and thriving in nature. But with that comes responsibility. Australia has some of the highest skin cancer rates in the world, with 2 in 3 Australians diagnosed during their lifetime. Outdoor activity brings enormous health and wellbeing benefits, but it also increases exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation - the major cause of skin cancer. The good news? Skin cancer is preventable, and simple, visible sun safe behaviours make a powerful difference.
As a member organisation, you have an important role in protecting your staff, volunteers, members and spectators. By putting strong sun protection in place, you help to:
· Keep your community safe while enjoying the outdoors
· Role‑model best‑practice sun‑safe behaviour
· Create a culture where sun protection is the norm
Get Involved
The Sun Safe Outdoors Photo Competition invites OCA members - along with their outdoor businesses, clubs, educators and community networks - to submit photos that show your people enjoying outdoor activities while being sun safe. Think broad‑brimmed hats, long‑sleeved clothing, sunscreen use, shade, sunglasses and activity‑specific protective equipment.
There’s no limit to how many photos you can submit, you can submit as many entries as you like! Each entry can include up to five images at one time.
Photo Criteria
Photo criteria follow the well‑known Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide principles and are designed to reflect real‑world outdoor activity, including adventure and active recreation where sun protection may need to be adapted for safety reasons.
Entries must demonstrate:
· Activity‑appropriate sun protection
· Correct use of any required PPE
· No unsafe or misleading contexts
Before submitting, make sure your photo meets the Sun Safe Outdoors Photo Competition Criteria.
